I have no idea how this keeps happening but until it stops, I'm going to keep mentioning it. I am almost 100% certain I loved this book more than the last. This group of characters really brings out the emotions in me. I absolutely loved Jack and Mary in this book. There was so much between them and so much that happened. I was on an emotional roller coaster the entire time I was reading this book.
Jack Talent is one of SOS' most successful regulators. But there is one case that he can't solve. Or he doesn't want to solve. Poppy Lane the head of the SOS, put Mary Chase on the hunt. She makes Mary his partner. Neither one of them are very pleased with the situation. However, Mary was Poppy's assistant for a long time and she trusts her. Jack is basically family and Poppy needs someone with Jack she can trust. There's a murderer on the loose and the perpetrator is hunting down shifters.
Mary and Jack have not gotten along since they met. Jack is harsh on her for reasons that are opaque to her. Jack has his reasons but they're all bad. Granted the tension between them is palpable. The witty banter back and forth is enough to make the most stoic person crack a smile. And both of their stories are enough to make anyone break down and cry. Okay, it was me.. I was crying. Poor Jack and Mary. And right when you thought things were going to change, BOOM. The bomb drops.
So we have these regulators on the hunt for a murderer who is literally both from out of this world and right under their noses. We have two people who were both so broken but who have built themselves back up, they have such hard exteriors. But you know what they say, people who are toughest on the outside are the softest on the inside. In this case it's so true.
If you haven't read this series, you're so missing out. While you can read them as stand alone books, you really shouldn't. Each of these books are so perfect and then it gets more perfect. Kristen Callihan gives me life and has such a way of bringing these stories right into your freaking heart and it's insane and wonderful and amazing. READ THESE BOOKS.
