I have a confession to make. I was about 53% through this book when for some reason it struck me that I hadn't read Gilded, which is the second book in the series. So I just said screw it and finished reading it. I started off so strong in this series too, I even read the novella. Luckily I was able to pick up on the majority of what was happening even if some of the why was missing. I feel like a dunce. Anyhow, I really enjoyed this installment in Cherry's life.
Things for Cherry seem to be dancing right on the edge. And she's not going to be falling in the right direction. Still acting as a collector, she's on the hunt for the collector who has been on her tail since Tarnished. She's working somewhat for the Veil although she believes she has a firm handle on that situation. She's also living mostly at the Menagerie, she's dealing with Hawke at every turn and also dealing with her seemingly growing opium addiction. Cherry really believes she has everything under control but she's entirely wrong.
I really like how we get to see this woman who is working on making her own way. Granted she's an opium addict, she has her hands in all the wrong pockets, and things aren't going the way she planned. She's still standing up for herself and not letting people push her around. As much as she can anyhow. Trust me when I say that things go really badly for her even after she faces off with the collector who has been shadowing her since Tarnished.
And holy hell we get one good scene with Hawke and man is it friggen good. I'm sure while I was reading it my eyes had that glassy "OH MY GOD" look in them. Once you start reading this book, you're going to get sucked in to this underbelly of elitist London that is just so dark and gritty. And of course we're left with this crazy cliff hanger and the last couple chapters of this book were just like "WHAT?!?!?!?" I can't wait to pick up the next book in this series. If you haven't read this yet, you're going to want to. (ps, make sure you're not dumb like me and read book 2 first haha)
