Series: The Hollows #4
 Publication Date: June 2006
Publisher: Harper Torch
Pages: 510
 Reviewer: Amber R.

This is the fourth book in The Hollows series and with each book I read the more and more I love these characters. Rachel is a complex, dynamic character and her stories just get better and better. We all know that in the previous books that she became "alpha" over David for insurance and business purposes. Well that comes back to bite her in the ass immediately in this book. While helping David out with a run, they're ambushed by a group of weres who demand that Rachel fight to remain alpha over David. She has no choice but to do what needs to be done. Rachel is one scrappy lady. She wins but she barely scrapes by which leads her to finding a demon curse that will allow her to turn into a werewolf on her will. This curse becomes handy sooner rather than later.

Rachel and Jenks have been on the outs for some time because of a silly argument. Rachel has tried and tried to get Jenks to talk to her but it's not gone over well so far. Well Jenk's wife comes to Rachel because Jenks is about to go off on a crazy expedition to bring his son home after he took off with Rachel's ex, Nick. But Rachel and Jenks are able to make up and work together again. Rachel convinces Jenks to let her use magic to make him big since pixies can't deal with the cold and they're heading to Michigan so this seems like the best idea. Once they find Jenks, they find out that a group of weres have captured and are holding Nick. So Rachel decides that it's her job to go rescue him. And things just escalate from there. Nick is being held by a group of weres who want something he took, something that could flip the balances in the supe world.

Rachel does some deep soul searching in this book. She definitely gets some insight about what makes her tick. Ivy and her have been on this ledge since they left the IS and they both jump over the side. Their relationship is developing but into what, it's unclear at this stage. But things are definitely changing. Rachel's relationship with Kisten is still going strong. But when Nick comes back into the picture things get blurry for a bit. However, while we knew that Nick was into some dicey stuff before we really don't get a clear picture on how messed up Nick is until this book. He is a complete asshole.

I really loved this book. There was just so much going on and so much growth and more clarity than what I've seen before with these characters. I can't wait to see what happens next. From the little bit I've heard from Amber I., I haven't even scratched the surface yet. This is easily becoming one of my favorite UF series.

  1. I loved the Hollows series. It's been forever since I read them, may have to go pick them up off the shelves again

    1. I'm steadily making my way through them. They're really great and I love all the different characters.

  2. I am so glad you are enjoying this series, it is one of my favorites and I love revisiting it again and again. I so agree that the more your read the more you like it and trust me it just keeps getting better ;)

    1. Amber I. keeps telling me to just wait. So I'm really looking forward to getting in deeper.

  3. Ive been re-reading the series this year and just finished the fifth again. By far my favorite series. Each book gets better, which is unusual for series, where usually they start declining at the end. Not so here. Everything stays fresh and interesting. The fourth was a great book too. Good review.

  4. oh yes, crap for brains Nick is definitely an asshole! Love this series, one of my first UF and feel a special relationship with it! lol

  5. I recently read the 10th book, and it is still going good. I also recommend the prequel novella in Holidays are Hell anthology.
