I was in a YA slump and I've found all these amazing YA books over the past couple months. This is a book that I've had on my TBR for such a long time and I am so glad that I finally decided to read this.
Unearthly is a YA novel about Clara, a sixteen year old girl from California. For all intents and purposes she's a normal girl, she lives with her mom and younger brother, she goes to school, she has friends. But Clara isn't normal. She is a quarter angel. Her mom is half angel. And Clara is quickly coming into her powers and learning what being part angel really means. According to her mom all angels are here to fulfill a purpose in life but what that purpose means, consists of really varies per angel. Clara has these visions of a boy standing on the edge of a forest fire. Her mom decides that her purpose is to save this boy. In order to do that they have to move to the state that the boy lives in. Once they get there things are really not what they think.
Clara's mom starts acting really odd and becomes pretty detached and vague about what's going on. Actually she's always been pretty vague about what being part angel really means and whenever Clara tries to ask questions there is always a wall there. Quickly Clara releases that a classmate of hers, Christian, is the boy from her visions. So she tries to get close to him but there are a lot of obstacles in her way. Mainly his girlfriend, Kay. Clara's friend Wendy tries to warn Clara away from Christian, she just thinks that everyone worships him and he's not really what Clara needs. However, Wendy doesn't realize what's going on and Clara isn't allowed to tell her about her angel side. Angela, Clara's other friend is forcing Clara towards Christian but she does know about Clara's angel side because Angela is part angel as well.
There are some really surprising parts to this book. Especially over the summer when Christian has to go away and Clara is stuck in town with Wendy's twin brother, Tucker. There is slight love triangle but not really. Which I was really glad about because love triangles are the worst. I think that there is a lot in this book that goes untold. I'm really hoping that some of these questions get answered in the next book. Clara's mom is definitely hiding something and I think it's something big. Also, I don't think that Clara's friend Angela has her best intentions in mind. I don't know for sure yet but this is another question I hope gets answered.
I would definitely recommend this book. I really thought it was great. I read it in just a day because I needed to know what happened next. I'm already looking forward to reading the next book in this series. There are a lot of things that I think need to be answered and a lot of things that are still up in the air. If you haven't read this yet, definitely do. It's a great YA book, plus I think that the story is really amazing and something unique.
Amber I. reviewed this way back when so if you want to check it out you can do so here.
