Laura Kaye

Introduce Yourself to our readers I’d be glad to! And thanks for having me! I write paranormal and contemporary romance and have four series underway right now: the Hearts of the Anemoi (Greek mythology inspired), the Vampire Warrior Kings, the Heroes series, and the Hard Ink series. I live in Maryland with my husband and two daughters and am addicted to all things vampire and Sons of Anarchy. And I’m mated to Zsadist. Heh.

Tell us a little about your books?
I have three new releases in 2013. On May 28, South of Surrender, the third book in my Hearts of the Anemoi series releases. On August 1, Taken by the Vampire King, the third book in my Vampire Warrior Kings series releases. And on November 26, Hard As It Gets, the debut novel in my Hard Ink series releases. It’s gonna be a fun year!

Is this your first RT convention?
No! Last year was my first and it was a blast!

What are you most looking forward to at RT?
I’m looking forward to meeting readers and catching up with author friends! I’m on four game panels and those are always a blast!

Vampires to Die For, Wednesday at 12pm
Gods and Monsters—Scrambled, Friday at 11:15 am
Book Cover Bingo, Friday at 3:45pm
Candy and Spoons, Friday at 7:30pm

I’m also co-hosting the bad movie tweet-along Cinema Craptastique on Tuesday night at 8:30pm, which is going to be full of awesome!

Where can we find you at RT? Are you on any panels going to any parties etc.
In addition to the panels above, I’ll also be signing at the eBook Expo (ebooks + paperbacks of Hearts in Darkness, Her Forbidden Hero, and One Night with a Hero) and the Giant Book Fair (North of Need, West of Want, and maybe South of Surrender), and appearing on these additional panels/parties:

Using Theme to Strengthen Your Novel and Your Brand, Wednesday at 5pm
Avon Red Slipper Lounge, Friday, 6:15pm

If we seen you at the bar what drink would be in your hand?
Probably a Sprite or a Ginger Ale! I have almost NO tolerance for alcohol whatsoever! LOL

Since this event is for paranormal authors, can you tell us more about the paranormal in your book?
The Hearts of the Anemoi series is based on the mythology of the Anemoi, wind gods the Greeks associated with the weather and seasons. As Greek gods, my heroes have the ability to appear in human, elemental, and animal forms, can affect the weather by will or by their emotions, have the ability to be invisible, and have healing abilities, too.

What's your favorite paranormal and why?
Vampires are my all-time favorite paranormal creature. They’re sexy, mysterious, immortal, animalistic, powerful, tortured, sexy…

Tell us a little about your newest book?
Gladly! South of Surrender is about the Supreme God of the South Wind and Summer, Chrysander Notos, who everyone views as the carefree golden boy. Only, not so much… Here’s the blurb:

She's the only one who can see through his golden boy façade to the broken god within...

Chrysander Notos, Supreme God of the South Wind and Summer, is on a mission: save Eurus from his death sentence and prove his troubled brother can be redeemed. But Eurus fights back, triggering vicious storms that threaten the mortal realm and dangerously drain Chrys.

Laney Summerlyn refuses to give up her grandfather's horse farm, despite her deteriorating vision. More than ever, she needs the organized routine of her life at Summerlyn Stables, until a ferocious storm brings an impossible—and beautiful—creature crashing down from the heavens.

Injured while fighting Eurus, Chrys finds himself at the mercy of a mortal woman whose compassion and acceptance he can't resist. As they surrender to the passion flaring between them, immortal enemies close in, forcing Chrys to choose between his brother and the only woman who's ever loved the real him.

What inspired you to write in the paranormal genre?
My family totally believed in the paranormal when I was growing up. My own family lure is filled with ghost stories, evil-eyed curses, and the like. So I was fascinated by all things supernatural as a kid and grew up reading every paranormal story I could. It was only natural that I’d write paranormal stories, too.

Who are you bunking with?
I’m rooming with YA paranormal author Lea Nolan, who is my best friend and daily writing partner at Panera Bread!

Why do you attend conventions?
Because they’re a great way to meet readers, network with other folks in publishing, and catch-up with my author friends! I look forward to them!

Is your RT experience all planned out or are you more of a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants type person?
It’s very planned out this year! I’m on a ton of panels which is awesome because it’ll give me lots of opportunities to meet readers!

  5. South Of Surrender has a really hot cover! I wanted to ask Laura, if when she writes her characters does she take inspiration from real people in her life or are they imaginary?
    Thanks!

    1. Thanks! I draw inspiration from lots of places, and sometimes stories just come to me and I don't know where they come from. This series was inspired by my love of snowmen--North of Need--and the mythology of the Greek Anemoi.

    1. Usually I know before writing the first because I conceive of the story that way from the beginning. Occasionally I don't know something is a series and then secondary characters are so interesting I have to write them!

  19. Girls, you really need to edit the title of this blogpost! Laura is the name of this great author, not Lisa.

I am looking forward to reading South of Surrender, as I have already enjoyed the first two books in the series. I really like Chrysander, but to try and redeem Euros? I hate his selfish ass.
Laura, any chance of more than four books in this series?

    1. Hi Ren - I usually get input, but I almost never get to decide the cover. With a few publishers I'm just given the cover and that's it - no back and forth, so it depends. I did come up with the titles of this series! :)
