MAGICAL TRICKS. DEMONIC TREATS. After narrowly escaping her fate as a sacrificial scapegoat, Arcadia Bell is back to normal. Or at least as ordinary as life can be for a renegade magician and owner of a tiki bar that caters to Earthbound demons. She’s gearing up for the busiest day of the year—Halloween—when a vengeful kidnapper paralyzes the community. The influential head of the local Hellfire Club taps Cady to track down the fiendish bogeyman, and now that she’s dating red-hot Lon Butler, the Club’s wayward son, she can hardly say no.
Cady and Lon untangle a gruesome thirty-year trail of clues that points to danger for the club members’ children. But locating the person behind the terror will require some metaphysical help from Cady’s loyal bar patrons as well as her potent new Moonchild powers—and she’d better figure it out before the final victim disappears and her own darkest secret becomes her biggest enemy.
I absolutely loved this followup to Kindling The Moon. Arcadia Bell is easily becoming one of the best urban fantasy heroines I've read this year. This character just draws you in, honestly the entire story does. So in this book the relationship between Arcadia and Lon has progressed. Their relationship is definitely growing and they're getting closer. They're kind of partners throughout, they definitely were in the first book and that continues here. I love their relationship. I think they are a good fit for each other. I love Lon's son Jupe too. He's awesome and so funny. Some of the moments between Arcadia and Jupe make me just want to cry they're so incredibly sweet. I just really loved seeing the build up of these relationships. You really were able to connect with them.
Arcadia is hired on by the Hellfire Club's leader and one of Lon's fathers old time friends to find out who is kidnapping Earthbound teenagers in their town. The same exact thing happened 30 years earlier but the killer was never caught. Because of Arcadia's abilities with magic they think she's the one for the job. Lon is there to help her of course. They're actually worried about keeping track of Jupe until they figure out what's going on to make sure that he doesn't get kidnapped. The storyline is really excellent and it keeps you guessing.
There are some parts in this book that I wanted to beat the crap out of Dare, the Hellfire Club's leader. If you read it and get to it, let me know. I seriously hate that freaking guy. I guess if a book invokes strong emotions in you, that's how you know it was worth it. I can't wait to read the next installment in this series and find out where Arcadia, Lon, and Jupe go next.
