When killing people is your job, there’s no such thing as a vacation. Then again, how often does an assassin live long enough to enjoy her retirement? In this line of work, you either get lucky or you get dead. And since I destroyed my nemesis Mab Monroe a few weeks ago, all of Ashland’s lowlifes are gunning to make a name for themselves by taking out the lethal Spider—me, Gin Blanco. So I’m leaving behind my beloved barbecue joint and heading south with my baby sister, Bria, to cool my heels in a swanky beach town. Call it a weekend of fun in the sun. But when a powerful vampire with deadly elemental magic threatens an old friend of Bria’s, it looks like I’ll have to dig my silverstone knives out of my suitcase after all. Complicating matters further is the reappearance of Detective Donovan Caine, my old lover. But Donovan is the least of my problems. Because this time, the danger is hot on my trail, and not even my elemental Ice and Stone magic may be enough to save me from getting buried in the sand—permanently.

Now that Mab is dead, Finn convinces Gin to take a break because things haven't been quite as smooth since Gin took her out. Since Mab's untimely or timely death, however you want to look at it, Gin has been the target of Ashland's Underworld. Goons and thugs galore have been staking her at the Pork Pit and trying to take her out. Word is out that she killed Mab and that she is the renown Spider. Of course, they're right but killing Gin isn't easy.

Bria and Gin head to the town that Bria grew up in with her adoptive parents. Things are tense between the sisters. Bria is still coming to terms with who Gin is and Gin is tiptoeing around Bria to not hurt her feelings. The tension rises when Bria's old friend comes into the mix. Gin is jealous of their relationship, not too mention the friend's fiance is none other than Donovan Caine. Not only do we have all these intense personal relationships running but there is a murderous, psychopath, entrepreneur of a vampire trying to run Bria's friend out of business. So Gin decides to help the friend out for numerous reasons. Finn and Owen join the mix too. And Jojo and Sophie aren't far behind.

Gin is bad ass as ever in this book. She's still kicking major ass even though the vamp gets the best of her. I've got to say when Donovan popped his head up in this book, I was not a happy reader. I love these books and I love Gin. But this thing with Donovan doesn't seem like the Gin I know. She keeps going over and picking apart the stuff with him. Really, it was a fling and the only reason she could see a possibility of a future with him was because he knew who she is. BUT he treated her like crap when they weren't banging. I remember one of the times the did the nasty, like immediately after he was a complete dick to her. The Gin Blanco I know would've have left him high and dry after that. So I can't wrap my mind around why she keeps having this soft spot for him. Especially now that she has the amazing Owen in her life.

Okay that's my vent. I'm not going to give anything away. So I'll leave it that this book was awesome. Gin is continuing her pro bono work. Finn and Bria are together and I really like that. Some good stuff happens at the end of the book that make up for all the things I hated. So all and all I give it five stars, two thumbs up and all the recommendations ever.

  • Okay if you haven't read this book yet please step away. That means you Carmel. haha

Okay so guess who is back? The douche of all douche bags. I was ready to scream. I was so nervous what Gin was going to do. Was she going to ruin what we have with Owen for this dick? And man it she totally gave us a scare. Seriously scared me. I was ready to leave this book behind if things went a certain way. Luckily for us though Donovan is still king douche bag and Owen is still king holy mchotty!

Now I liked this book but I do have a few complaints. Gin thinks Bria blames her for getting caught by Mab and tortured. So when these two finally talk it out I was ready for Bria to tell her no it wasn't her fault. But you know what she didn't. She does blame Gin even though she's trying not to. And I am like WHAT? As I recall you and Finn knew that shit was going down that night and to be on the look out but what did you do, you guys decided hey who cares, lets screw. So who is to blame here. Bria should have never let her guard down that night and if she didn't things may have turned out different. So yessers I was mad about that. It kinda lowered my like for her.

Anyways Gin is still kicking some ass. She sees someone in trouble even though she is on vacation and she steps up to help. But just because Mab is gone doesn't mean her other opponents aren't going to be hard to beat. This time Gin nearly loses her life and her magic but she just never gives up. When she gives her word she is going to do it no matter what.

My main love of this book was Owen. I mean he is so awesome. I loved the little things he said to Donovan. I loved how he stood by Gins side no matter what she was doing. He is like that rock in her life and he is just so freaking awesome. I swear to the book gods if something bad happens to him I will scream and walk away from this series. I mean it, so please someone who has read book 7 give me some reassurance. I have that feeling, I had before I read this book and I thought maybe I was going to be right. But I made it through this book with Owen now the next book scares me more.

Okay I have rambled on enough. I love this series. I am so emotionally invested in it. Its like a piece of me is in these books and well I am crazy flakes. One of the best Urban Fantasies ever written!

  4. I just finished it so I came back to read your review. Hehe Bria pissed me off so bad in this installment. I agree, she should have taken some responsibility from being captured and tortured by Mab Monroe. It wasn't Gin's fault. AT ALL. I hated how she treated Blanco at the beginning of this book. Blabbing about how awesome Cali is, not introducing her to her friend the moment she came to say hi, etc. She acted like a real baby but I was happy with how their relationship bounced back at the end of the book and Bria admitted that she didn't want to make the same mistakes as Donovan. Owen's zings at Cain were priceless; I love, love, LOVE him! Plus, the ending was great; what goes around comes around douchebag!! LOL whoa, super long comment but I could blab about this series all day; it's just so damn good! Great reviews ladies!

    1. When I wrote this review it was a few weeks ago so I didn't want you to see that Donovan was back or anything. Anyways yes Bria totally pissed me off. The way she treated Gin was so uncalled for. And I couldn't believe when she really sat there telling Gin she blamed her for what Mab did. And then the whole thing with her not wanting to introduce her to her friend and well I lost a lot of love for Bria. I know she kinda tried better at the end but I am still okay with her. But Finn is still cool. Luckily Owen is freaking awesome. I love him so much. I love the way he is with Gin. I am so glad she didn't f*** anything up!

    2. Donovan is a complete D in this book. I was so mad to see him pop back up, AGAIN. Also, the crap with Bria made me soo mad. She was completely an ass for no reason. Blaming Gin for her circumstances is complete crap.
