Creature Feature with Jennifer James (Giveaway)

Welcome to our brand spanking new
 "Creature Feature"
each week we will have an author on here talking to us about their spin on a paranormal "creature" from their books.

Today's Guest of Honor is
Jennifer James
Hope you Enjoy!

  • What is your creature?
A vampire that is the result of evolution and genetics…and maybe a little magic.
  • Name:
Daniel (Aka T.T.B.—Tall, Tanned, and Blonde)
  • Is your creature from a specific part of the world?
He’s lived all over the place, the most recent before America is Venice, Italy. Today he’s living in Cleveland, Ohio, in a very posh condo on the shores of Lake Erie.
  • Physical Description?
About 6’3”, with wavy blonde hair he wears a little long so that it often falls into his gorgeous baby blues. Built like an NBA player, Daniel is lanky, but well muscled and tanned…everywhere. He has a small amount of chest hair and a happy trail any woman would love to follow to see if he’s a natural blonde. On his left pectoral he has a tattoo done in shades of black, grey, and white of a snake wrapped around a sword blade oruboros style.
  • What book or series does this creature appear in?
Daniel is from the Hunger Series, and you meet him right off the bat in chapter one of book one, Hunger Embraced.
  • What is the history of this creature?
Well, I don’t want to give too much away because it would be a spoiler for the series. But what I can say is that vampires have lived among humans for several centuries, doing their best to keep a low profile. Daniel himself is a Guardian for the Vampire Council, and he has several homes throughout the world. He has a mystical tie to the ocean, so most of his homes are as close to the water as he can get them. He finds the sound of the waves soothing.
  • What are their strengths?
Psychic powers, physical strength and speed, excellent fighting skills, and patience.
  • What are their weaknesses?
The race as a whole is in decline. They are dying out because they reproduce very slowly or not at all. Most humans die if they attempt to become a vampire. They have also grown in many ways arrogant of their own superiority, and the Vampire Council is so archaic that they don’t function well anymore.
  • How long can they live?
Indefinitely. They are alive, so therefore they should die, but the magic in their make-up allows a vampire to live for hundreds or even thousands of yreas. But most don’t make it that long.
  • What so they need to survive?
Daniel needs blood, but because he can also eat (and does!) human food, he doesn’t need blood all that often. If he’s injured, then his need for blood increases. He also needs extra sugar. So you’ll often catch him munching on M&M’s.
  • What are some unique characteristics that set them apart from humans?
Well, the fangs. And many of them have some modicum of magical ability. Daniel can read minds and influence people with his voice.
  • Are they made or born?
Once upon a time, they were all born. Now the vast majority are made, but if a human lacks the proper DNA sequencing, they’ll die trying to be turned.
  • Your Creature VS Common Folk Lore: Tell us the differences and similarities:
Well, Daniel has fangs and drinks blood. He can use his voice to manipulate people and has some other magic. But, he’s not dead, garlic and sunlight don’t bother him, a stake to the heart won’t kill him and neither will silver. The only sure way to kill a vampire is to cut their head off, burn the body, mix a bunch of iron in with the ashes, and dump the whole thing in running water. He doesn’t usually kill people when he feeds, and he doesn’t need an invitation to enter your home. (But I bet if you saw him standing there, you’d invite him in. *grin*)

She’s fed up with being fed on.

All Miranda Thibodeaux really wants to do is survive corporate hell and be left alone. But as the daughter of the Incubi king, being left along isn’t on her schedule. And as an avatar to a goddess with multiple personality issues, taking things in stride isn’t either.

Daniel looks like an ordinary surfer boy--T. T. B.--Tall, Tanned, and Blonde. Hot he may be, but ordinary he’s not. Beneath the pretty packaging lies a ruthless warrior, a servant to the Vampire Council. His mission is to find Miranda and present her to the council, then get the hell out of Dodge before he loses his focus. The last thing he needs is the distraction of the testy female.

When circumstances force Miranda to turn to T.T.B. for help, they both end up with more than they bargained for. And that normal human life she wanted? Not really doable when everyone wants a piece of her...

  5. @Kristen: It's fun to create your own creature...and let your imagination run wild saying "What if?" and then you get to follow those plot bunnies. :)

  7. This book sounds great! I will have to put it on my TBR list. One of the things that I love about paranormals is that authors can create their characters and either follow or disregard the folk lores. I love that they can create totally unique stories.
