JUSTINE KNOWS SHE’S GOING TO DIE. ANY SECOND NOW.

Justine Jones has a secret. A hardcore hypochondriac, she’s convinced a blood vessel is about to burst in her brain. Then, out of the blue, a startlingly handsome man named Packard peers into Justine’s soul and invites her to join his private crime-fighting team. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime deal. With a little of Packard’s hands-on training, Justine can weaponize her neurosis, turning it outward on Midcity’s worst criminals, and finally get the freedom from fear she’s always craved. End of problem.

Or is it? In Midcity, a dashing police chief is fighting a unique breed of outlaw with more than human powers. And while Justine’s first missions, including one against a nymphomaniac husband-killer, are thrilling successes, there is more to Packard than meets the eye. Soon, while battling her attraction to two very different men, Justine is plunging deeper into a world of wizardry, eroticism, and cosmic secrets. With Packard’s help, Justine has freed herself from her madness—only to discover a reality more frightening than anyone’s worst fears.

I liked this book, its definitely unique and something I have never seen done before but I wasn't in love with it. There were a few things that bothered me. My main thing is why are so many people a hypochondriac? I don't ever think that was explained to me. If it was I missed it. I just don't get why so many people in the world have this problem. Its not just a few people it seems like more then half the people. Also how can they do the thing they do? Can anybody do this?  Oh and the word "nemesis" was just used to much. It made the "evil guy" sound like a joke or something from a kids movie (at least to me it did)

I did like Packard. Of course I did. He has that bad ass vibe, he is dark and mysterious and so what is there not to like. I am upset about the two times Justine started getting it on with him though. Not only did she leave the poor man hanging she left me hanging as well.

Justine was a likeable character. Not that I liked all her decisions especially her end one. But she has potential.

So this book is just not like any other book. The peoples super power steams from their fears. They take their fears and put them into other criminals to break them down and make them better people. Its neat and odd.  It helps them get control of their fears but there is a little side effect and of course a price to being in Packard's gang of vigilantes.

While I wasn't in love with this book I will definitely be reading the next book. And so what if my main reason is I am hoping to see Packard get naked? lol

  1. One of my blogger gf's is a huge Carolyn Crane fan but I still have yet to read any of her books. After reading your review I'm still on the fence but also kinda curious about your naked Packard comment. LOL

    1. I might look for spoilers to make sure he gets naked, not sure if I want to read more if not. It was an okay read just wasn't totally my thing.

Carolyn Crane is so nice and funny in person (meet her at AADNOLA).

  3. Yikes! I'm sorry you didn't really love this book. I, on the other hand, was obsessed with it when I read (it may or may not be because some events were very similar with something happening in my real life at the moment and it was easier to connect with the story). But hey, it gets better. The series overall is very original and like nothing I ever read in the UF world. So badass! And things with Packard get more...um, interesting. I hope you like the other books better! (the last one is a killer)
