Guest Post and Giveaway with Jennifer James

Thanks to the ladies of Awesomesauce for hosting me today!

I’ve got a thing for Halloween. I love the pumpkins, the candy, the costumes…but most of all I love the scary movies.

It seemed like for a while there all the “scary”  movies that were coming out were terrible remakes or so thinly, poorly, plotted and paced, that I started to lose all hope that anything new and worthwhile would ever come out. I was forced to break out all the oldie but goodie favorites like A Nightmare on Elm Street and The Howling. I still really like those movies, and will watch them for fun here and there, but even Freddy Krueger can start to get old and boring.

When I was younger, I loved a good slasher flick. (Probably why I still love Freddy’s demented, horrible sense of humor) But as I’ve grown older, I’ve come to have much more appreciation for a great movie that messes with me psychologically. I love things like Paranormal Activity and Sinister. Now, I know, they’re not exactly giant feats of cinematic excellence, but I love how the atmosphere and the way that tricks of the light and the things you *don’t* see make everything so much more terrifying. While films like Hostel have their place, I’d much rather be hiding inside the hood of my coat because every hair on my body is standing on end than because I’m completely freaked out than hiding because I want to puke from gratuitous, gross bloody torture scenes.

If you don’t like scary movies, you’re welcome to come and watch my pal Heidi and I at one of these films. We go together and spend a lot of the movie hiding our faces in each other’s shoulders, our coat hoods, behind our hands…and jumping out of fright on a regular, hilarious basis. We’re a movie unto ourselves. (It’s sort of pathetic, but good times anyway.)

    1. I agree, times 1000...the only time I really enjoy lots of gore is in a zombie flick, because zombies are gross and I expect it. Other than that, I think the less you show me, the better, cause my brain will freak me out plenty.

  3. Less is more! Your imagination can freak you out more that what any movie can show you.

I just saw PA #4 last weekend. Those movie are good in the way that less is more.

I still like blood and gore but they don't freak me out. Unless it's The Walking Dead. LOL

    1. Proserpine, the great thing about an anthology is that the price for this sucker is pretty low, and you get a taste of all our different writing styles and voices. So, if you don't like one of the stories, the investment-financial and time-is low.

But I hope you like us. ;)

  7. I don't go to scary movies anymore! I figure why add the drama. I would rather feel happy when I leave a movie rather than running to the car looking over my shoulder...LOL
