Magic-wielding Churchwitch and secret addict Chess Putnam knows better than anyone just how high a price people are willing to pay for a chemical rush. But when someone with money to burn and a penchant for black magic starts tampering with Downside’s drug supply, Chess realizes that the unlucky customers are paying with their souls—and taking the innocent with them, as the magic-infused speed compels them to kill in the most gruesome ways possible.

As if the streets weren’t scary enough, the looming war between the two men in her life explodes, taking even more casualties and putting Chess squarely in the middle. Downside could become a literal ghost town if Chess doesn’t find a way to stop both the war and the dark wave of death-magic, and the only way to do that is to use both her addiction and her power to enter the spell and chase the magic all the way back to its malevolent source. Too bad that doing so will probably kill Chess—if the war doesn’t first destroy the man who’s become her reason for living.

Amber R's Thoughts

This has been an amazing series from book one and book five doesn't disappoint. Chess is back at it again, in the mix of all kinds of Downside trouble. This time it doesn't involve the Church. This time someone is making the people of downside their own personal zombie-esque army. Basically there is trouble all around because Lex tries to recruit Terrible to his side and when Terrible refuses his offer, well, let's just say Lex doesn't take it well.

Chess is still a mess in this book. I just want to hug her and tell her that she's going to be okay. We've seen the steady increase of her drug intake over the past four books. I wish I could say that she slows down but unfortunately she just speeds up. I think a lot of things play into this but the  main reasons are obvious. Poor thing is so certain that she isn't worth anything, that Terrible is going to realize how awful she is and leave her, that Elder Griffen is going to realize that she is a horrible person. I feel so bad for her.

A lot of things come to front in this book. Lex is running his fathers half of Downside, Chess is slowly spiraling out of control withe her drug usage, Terrible may have met his match because someone is trying their hardest to kill him. Not to mention, yet again, there is all kinds of ghostly magic running rampant in Downside. I don't know if I've said it enough but if you haven't read this series, please do!

Amber I's Thoughts

The paragraph below has some slight spoliers, and a total rant it can't be helped!

Oh Chess Chess Chess. Why do you torture me so. You know I love you but why do you do this to me. I can deal with a lot of things like your out of control drug use and well everything EXCEPT Lex! Why oh why do you want to keep him in your life? Yes he was your friend but he has also put a hit on Terrible and you have seen the assassin in action. Then there is also that bedroom scene!! What are you thinking!! Just stop it if not for Terrible's sake then for mine! I literally threw my kindle down and jumped online to get some reassurance that things where not going to go where I thought. I was ready to quit the book in the middle and in the middle of the scene! GRRRRRR Still MAD!

If not for a few scenes, well one big one this would have been my most favorite book in the series. There is this scene towards the end with her and Terrible on the roof and the things he said just made me cry. He is so freaking sweet and awesome and I love him. Chess just better get her shit together. I know she has had it rough but I know she loves Terrible so she needs to get it together.

Okay lets say this, if you have come this far in the series then you are going to love this book. Its just full of emotions. You will go from throwing your kindle across the room to swooning to crying to laughing and it will just keep you on the edge of you seat the whole time. The action is so intense and their battles are even deadlier. Chess is still her drug using self loathing self but she has Terrible on her side and when they are together your heart will melt.

And if you haven't started this series then shame on you, get off of here and go buy the first book now!! Its one kick ass series and once you start it you are going to be addicted! Trust me on this.

  1. I'm with Amber I on this one. I don't want to hug Chess... I want to smack her! Stop screwing up a good thing, woman.

On the plus side... I love Terrible so much. (**swoon**)

    1. I don't even care about her drug problem, but when she messes with Terrible's heart that is when I get mad!

  2. OK... I'm just on Sacrificial Magic so I'll close my eyes on the spoilers. It wasn't til book 3, City of Ghosts that I truly fell in love with the series. So now I'm buckled up for this bumpy ride.
