THE DEPARTED HAVE ARRIVED.

The world is not the way it was. The dead have risen, and the living are under attack. The powerful Church of Real Truth, in charge since the government fell, has sworn to reimburse citizens being harassed by the deceased. Enter Chess Putnam, a fully tattooed witch and freewheeling ghost hunter. She’s got a real talent for banishing the wicked dead. But Chess is keeping a dark secret: She owes a lot of money to a murderous drug lord named Bump, who wants immediate payback in the form of a dangerous job that involves black magic, human sacrifice, a nefarious demonic creature, and enough wicked energy to wipe out a city of souls. Toss in lust for a rival gang leader and a dangerous attraction to Bump’s ruthless enforcer, and Chess begins to wonder if the rush is really worth it. Hell, yeah.

 Amber I's Thoughts

I am completely blown away with this book!! Seriously I love it when an author creates this whole NEW world. I can't imagine how creative a person has to be to think of it.

Chess's world is very dark! In her world there are murdering ghosts and about 20 years ago they took out a big chunk of society. Now the "Church" is in charge. But its not a religious one, in fact there is no religion now. There is the Truth, after the ghost came and killed so many they now that what the use to believe in was just a lie.  Chess works for the Church since she is a witch and helps debunk ghost stories or banishes them. There honestly is just too much going on for me to even begin to tell you about.

I really love a flawed heroine. Chess had a ROUGH past and now she is a big drug addict. This is a major part of the story but I wasn't appalled by it. Its kinda weird but I can see why she is the way she is. I really really liked her.

Be warned though most of the characters speak "Downside talk" its hard to explain and its a little hard to get used to. I was scared at first I wouldn't but after a few chapters I didn't even notice it.

This is seriously a MUST READ! As soon as I was finished with it, I went out and bought the 2nd book. Its addicting and from what my Terrible Girls tell me each book gets better and better. Its a perfect book for an Urban Fantasy lover who really wants to escape to a whole new world.

Amber R's Thoughts

This is another Amber I. recommendation, she is my book pimp. I didn't read or know anything about this book then I started it. I was about three chapters in when I decided I couldn't stop reading. This was the best .99 cents I spent all week.

Chess is our main character in this book. She is a witch for the Church. The Church is not any kind of church we recognize now though. Chess debunks claims that ghosts are haunting people and if there is a ghost, she banishes it. Chess has had a hard life. She was moved from foster home to foster home while growing up. And the people she met there were not nice to her. As a way to deal with her past Chess becomes a huge drug addict. But you totally feel for her, you can easily see why she is the way she is. You will definitely root for her throughout the book.

So basically she gets put on a job for the church. And her drug dealer, Bump, is having her work of her debt to him by working on this old airport. Terrible, one of his men is constantly with Chess to basically report back to Bump. Terrible ends being kind of a friend to Chess. She ends up trusting him which she doesn't do easily or at all. I absolutely love Terrible. Love him. I want him for myself. I'm sure he's going to be one of my new book boyfriends.

This book, this world absolutely sucked me in from the beginning. I can't wait to read the rest of this series. I already have the next two books. You all must read this as well. We need to know if you agree. Besides it is just an awesome book!

Buy on Amazon for only .99 cents. SOOO SOOO WORTH IT!

  10. I was late to the party on this series as well. I had listened to the audiobook of this one and it just didn't really do anything for me. Luckily Miss Vain came into my blogging world and encouraged me to re-read it, paper version this time, and see how I felt then.

I read it and while I didn't all out love this book I did see some great potential. I did love book two in this series and I'm dying to be able to find some time to read the third book which I have heard is the best one. :)

I'm glad you both gave this a shot and that you both enjoyed it. :)
