Chess Putnam has a lot on her plate. Mangled human corpses have started to show up on the streets of Downside, and Chess’s bosses at the Church of Real Truth have ordered her to team up with the ultra-powerful Black Squad agency to crack the grisly case.
Chess is under a binding spell that threatens death if she talks about the investigation, but the city’s most notorious crime boss—and Chess’s drug dealer—gets wind of her new assignment and insists on being kept informed. If that isn’t bad enough, a sinister street vendor appears to have information Chess needs. Only he’s not telling what he knows, or what it all has to do with the vast underground City of Eternity.
Now Chess will have to navigate killer wraiths, First Elders, and a lot of seriously nasty magic—all while coping with some not-so-small issues of her own. And the only man Chess can trust to help her through it all has every reason to want her dead
tsMy FAVORITE book in the series!! I have been waiting and waiting for that tunnel scene for 3 books now.lol No matter what else happened I will always have the tunnel and the bathroom scene. :) Not that it will really satisfy me, I want more of my drug addict heroine and my ugly hero!lol (Terrible may be described as ugly but like Chess that is so not how I see him)
The first half of this book is just rough on me. Chess has to deal with what she got caught doing (or should I say who she got caught doing) and this is hard for me to watch. I love Terrible and seeing him hurt and upset was just not fun. I know he has every right to be, but man was it rough. I really really hope Chess learned her lesson and never makes us go through something like that again.
Then there is the action of the book. It was intense. Chess is working on a special case for the Church and is under a binding spell, so if she talks about it to anyone her wrists slash open and she is incredible pain. Not that she wants to break her oath or anything but once Bump gets wind of it she better find some loop holes to talk.
When Bump forces Chess and Terrible to work together again. I was so happy. I thought yes now we are going to fix this. But Terrible was not having it. It was so hard because I know why he is mad but I also did feel for Chess, she had it rough and it wasn't like her and Terrible were together. Some of the scenes with them just totally broke my heart. I felt her pain.
This is just an amazing series. After each book I head to amazon to get the next one on my kindle. I love it! I am officially obsessed with it. I seriously did not think I was going to like it, with names like Terrible or the "down speak" I just wasn't convinced it was going to be for me. But man I was wrong wrong wrong!! If you are hesitant over the series, I say you better go get the first book NOW!
I can't even believe this book. I am so head over heels for Terrible and Chess and Elder Griffin! I love them all so much. I even love Lex. I started reading this series without knowing anything about it. And I couldn't be happier that I started these books. I know we're gushing but they are just that good.
Chess is on a super restricted case from the Church. She has a binding spell placed on her which makes her not able to talk to anyone besides specified people about the case. Anytime that she says too much, the special binding marks that put on her give her immense pain. This case is nothing what it seems and everything that the Church has worked for is on the line.
The whole thing between Terrible and Chess is too much. Even though Chess and Terrible aren't together, Terrible catches Chess with Lex. And he is not a happy camper. I feel for both of them. I really do. I see his point and I see hers too. It was just really heartbreaking to see him so cold to her. And to see her realize how much she really cares about him. Especially because feelings are so hard for her.
If you haven't read this series, please please do it. The books are super cheap off of Amazon and they are so, so amazing. I am deep into the fourth book and loving it so much. Be on the look out for that review.
