Deep in the shadowy foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains lies a dying town…My name is Amelia Gray. They call me The Graveyard Queen. I've been commissioned to restore an old cemetery in Asher Falls, South Carolina, but I'm coming to think I have another purpose here. Why is there a cemetery at the bottom of Bell Lake? Why am I drawn time and again to a hidden grave I've discovered in the woods? Something is eating away at the soul of this town—this withering kingdom—and it will only be restored if I can uncover the truth
Do you believe in ghosts?
A character in a movie once remarked that she didn’t necessarily believe in ghosts but she was afraid of them anyway. That’s kind of where I stand.
Who is your favorite character in the books?
I would have to say Amelia because I relate to her so well. I don’t see ghosts, but I’m a bit of a loner and I live inside my own head most of the time. I also like Dr. Shaw. He reminds me of Donald Sutherland. I think he has some deep, dark secrets and I look forward to revisiting him in the next book.
We here at awesomesauce think this series is one of the best this year, what is your favorite book this year?
You guys really are awesomesauce!!!! I’m a little behind, sorry to say, so my current reads actually came out last year or the year before. I’m just getting started on Daughter of Smoke & Bone, but I love it so far. Also catching up on the Beautiful Creatures series. I just read somewhere that they’re currently casting the movie, so I’m super excited about that. What else? The Replacement, which has the coolest, creepiest cover ever.
Are any of the characters based off people you know?
Not really. I was born and raised in the South so there are bits and pieces of me and my upbringing in all the characters, but that’s about it.
What was one of your favorite scenes to write?
The love scene in The Restorer was tons of fun. Someone emailed to say they didn’t know whether to be turned on or creeped out. That was the best compliment ever, lol. Also, I have to include the scene in The Kingdom where the guy in the coat slithers under the fence and crawls away on all fours because that’s actually based on something that happened to one of my best friends.
If you could Hollywood cast any of the characters in The Graveyard Queen books who would you pick?
Even though she’s a little young, Amanda Seyfried has an ethereal quality that I think would work well for Amelia. Also, you just know she could see ghosts with those big eyes. ;) Devlin is tougher for me, but I think he looks a little like the Matt Bomer character in In Time, which, ironically, stars Amanda Seyfried.
Can you tell us anything about the upcoming books?
The fourth book, tentatively titled The Keeper, takes right up where The Prophet left off. Amelia is haunted by a ghost that followed her back through the veil. She continues to deal with the consequences of breaking her father’s rules and the terrifying prospect of her destiny. Meanwhile, Devlin has a few more secrets that will come out in Book Five: The Order.
Out of the 3 books in the series that you have wrote which one do you like the best and why?
The Restorer because I think it really captured that sort of modern Gothic feel I wanted.
If you had to pick a little teaser from any of The Graveyard Queen books to draw people to read them what would you pick?
Sometimes as I wandered alone—and often lonely—through the lush fern beds and long curtains of silvery moss, I pretend the crumbling angels were wood nymphs and fairies and I their ruler, queen of my very own graveyard kingdom.
Has there ever been a scene you cut out of the books, that you wish people got to read, if so tell us about it?
I don’t think I cut out any whole scenes at all. I added to certain scenes for clarity and cut certain paragraphs to tighten, but for the most part, the final draft is just a more fleshed out version of the first.
When I try to describe your books I use words like, creepy, beautiful, mysterious, what would you use?
Dark, dreamy, withering. But I like yours better! :)
A SUPER THANKS TO AMANDA FOR THAT AWESOMESAUCE INTERVIEW!!!
Amanda Stevens is an avid reader, a wannabe taphophile, and a collector of all things Alfred Hitchcock. When she’s not writing, she likes taking road trips to Austin. And to Marfa. And to old cemeteries.
