Changing covers mid-series

Thursday, January 19, 2012
Ever notice how some books change covers? This happens for any number of reasons and well we won't get into all of them. Its especially annoying when this happens mid-series so your books don't match. Just recently 2 series that I have original covers for our changing the book covers. And it irritates me. I hate them not matching. Yes I can always rebuy them but I am cheap. I think they should wait to change covers until they go to paperback or something, just not mid-series.

Now we got the Nightshade cover, but before Wolfsbane came out they switched it to a new cover and also changed Nightshade. So those who got Nightshade before the change now have unmatching covers.
I really do like the new covers but this is how my books look together

3rd book will look like this

They decided to redo the 2 other books now too. So now this series also will not match since I have the 2 original covers. The new covers for Shift and Shade look like this

So you see another unmatching set, They should really wait to redo the covers..

Does this bother anyone else as much as me??

  1. I'm sure it bothers almost everyone. It angers me quite a bit b/c for one, yes, I hate when my covers don't match but also sometimes, it was better left alone and if they want to redo covers, wait until all the books are out, to do a new cover edition, or just do it in paperback or something, like The Across the Universe Series is doing.

Sometimes I don't think publishers think before they act. And to be honest I probal wouldn't have gave the Nightshade Trilogy a second glance, if the new covers were the covers I saw to begin with. The old covers are what drew me in b/c they are stunningly beautiful and very different. The new covers show what all werewolve books do and I don't like it. They messed up big with that crap!

  2. I can understand when they redo them in paperback but to do it mid-series is just mean. I loved the Nightshade cover too, that is the whole reason I picked it up.

And even with the Shade series, I DO NOT like these new covers. I really prefer the old ones.I am so mad at both of these series for doing this. The covers were fine how they were. I really wanted to own Wolfsbane in its original cover. I am so jealous of people who got an ARC and have that.

  3. I am too cheap to rebuy a book I own for the covers to match.lol.

And the first 2 books of Nightshade they redid are okay (not as awesome as the first) but Bloodrose is not that pretty. At least I don't think. I wish I could have seen how Bloodrose would look if they stuck to the originals. That goes with Shine too, I wish I could see how it could have looked.

    1. The publishers sent me a copy of the new nightshade hardback cover! Haha! I said that same thing when Bloodrose came out! I wish I could've seen what Bloodrose cover would've looked like. I bet it would've been gorgous! I would never rebuy the book if the covers don't match though. UGH!

  4. Totally get ya! Really wish they would've stuck with old look of Nightshade, although I do really like the paperback of the first one with Calla as human and wolf together!

Didn't care for the change of Jeri's books.

One change I did like is a new one, Jess Haines's series. I didn't care for how Shiarra looked so cartoonish. Now the cover for the new book out later this summer has a more normal looking chick on it. At least less cartoonish if totally different from the previous ones.

Another one that is changing slightly with its next book are the Chess Putnam ones by Stacia Kane. Not major differences but it doesn't quite match the rest I didn't think.

So sometimes I think changes can be good, but other times I don't know why publishers do it.

    1. I haven't read those other ones, but I think they should stick to one theme until all the books are out then maybe in mass market paperback have it come on different if they want. It just drives me nuts. And I really do not like the new Jeri ones. It was not an improvement.

I do like the Nightshade recover but I loved the other one too. I am not happy with Bloodrose cover at all. I don't think its very pretty.

  6. I totally hate when that happens! I agree, the covers should be changed on the paperback versions and not mid-series. I'm pretty OCD when it comes to my book collection so I completely understand Amber! Another pet peeve of mine is when a series goes from paperback to hardcover mid-series or vice versa...I want a matching set publishers!

    1. Oh I hate that too. Sometimes with the paperback and hard covers it is my fault because I am late to a series and like them when the first few books are paperback then the other ones are hard cover. But they really need to keep the set matching until the end, then they can do whatever they want. I like my books to match.

  7. LOL! I don't like it because it has led to me to get my hopes up that a new book in the series is out.

I too hate when the series goes from paperbacks to hardbacks.

Good choice for a pet peeve!

  8. yes, and the older books that is with a new cover ,reissue , if you dont keep up on authors sites , you tend to buy the same books as u bought before

  9. I definitely hate it, especially the whole Nightshade debacle because I never liked the new covers. I think they should have stuck with the original covers for the hardcovers and used the new covers solely for the paperbacks. Such a site subject for me, lol!
