Once a Witch (Witch #1)
by Carolyn MacCullough
Hardcover, 292 pages
Published September 14th 2009 by Clarion Books
Review by Amber I

From Goodreads

Tamsin Greene comes from a long line of witches, and she was supposed to be one of the most Talented among them. But Tamsin's magic never showed up. Now seventeen, Tamsin attends boarding school in Manhattan, far from her family. But when a handsome young professor mistakes her for her very Talented sister, Tamsin agrees to find a lost family heirloom for him. The search—and the stranger—will prove to be more sinister than they first appeared, ultimately sending Tamsin on a treasure hunt through time that will unlock the secret of her true identity, unearth the sins of her family, and unleash a power so vengeful that it could destroy them all. This is a spellbinding display of storytelling that will exhilarate, enthrall, and thoroughly enchant.

My Thoughts

This was a pretty good book. It was an easy and simple read. Not to long of a book either so it wasn't dragged out. I honestly liked it. And will read the next one in the series.

We only get to see a little of the side characters and I didn't really bond with any of them that much. But I did like Tamsin. I would have loved to spend more time with her family though. Hopefully we will be getting that.

It was a great start to a first book. It kept you interested and wanting to see how everything was going to play out. I liked trying to figure who or what the professor was. And it was neat going back in time. Its a great starter and I think the 2nd one will make it even better.

If you are looking for a simple light quick read then this will really keep you entertained.

I gave it 3 out of 5 stars.

Here is the info I got from Larissa's Life blog.

Every Sunday I will post a TOP 5 list on the blog. It can be about anything and every week I'll have a new theme {You can vote on next week’s theme on my left sidebar!} and I will ad the Mr.Linky bellow the post so you can do a list with the theme and add you link to it.

Rules:

1. Write a post listing your TOP 5 choices within the theme I chose (or was chosen on a poll) for the week.
2. Mention this Blog on the post and link back to it.
3. Fell free to use the Feature's image (there is a smaller size version of it bellow)
4. After you've finished your post, add you link (of the post, not your blog's main page) to the Mr.Linky at the end of that week's post.
5. If you don’t have a blog to post, just leave your list in the comments

The theme for today is:

Books You Loved & Was Surprised by it!

Not in any order

I used to think it was weird to hear adults loved Harry Potter. then one day I took my sister to see the 4th movie for her birthday and I loved it. SO I went out and bought all the books. I even was at a midnight opening for The Deathly Hallows and took my picture with a robe on and glasses. I even went to Hogwarts in Florida. I LOVE LOVE Harry Potter. And to think I use to laugh at people who did...

Vampire Academy

I did not really want to read this because of the name. I thought oh great another Twilight but I was at the library and my cousin swore it was a good book, and I had no others to read so I picked it up. And once again I loved it!! It is one of my favorite books.

This is another one, I was like not another Vampire YA Book. I only got it from the library because I was on a reading challenge and I needed a book that started with a G and I couldn't find one except this. And once again I freaking LOVED it! I read all 9 books in a month. I could not put them down..

I actually got this from the library read the first chapter, was not interested and returned it. Then I kept seeing reviews and hearing talk so I decided to give it another try and it also is one of those books, I love!!!

When I seen reviews for this book a lot of them where just about sex. Like the whole book was based on it or something. It just seemed there was little story and mostly sex scenes. I forget why I decided to give it a try. I think I liked what the book said it was about and I love adult books and didn't have any to read so I picked it up. And I am halfway through this series and I love it! Yes there is a lot of steamy sex scenes but theres such a good story to go with it.

And Thats my 5!!!

FROM GOODREADS

To save her mother's life, Clary must travel to the City of Glass, the ancestral home of the Shadowhunters -- never mind that entering the city without permission is against the Law, and breaking the Law could mean death. To make things worse, she learns that Jace does not want her there, and Simon has been thrown in prison by the Shadowhunters, who are deeply suspicious of a vampire who can withstand sunlight.
As Clary uncovers more about her family's past, she finds an ally in mysterious Shadow-hunter Sebastian. With Valentine mustering the full force of his power to destroy all Shadow-hunters forever, their only chance to defeat him is to fight alongside their eternal enemies. But can Downworlders and Shadowhunters put aside their hatred to work together? While Jace realizes exactly how much he's willing to risk for Clary, can she harness her new found powers to help save the Glass City -- whatever the cost?
Love is a mortal sin and the secrets of the past prove deadly as Clary and Jace face down Valentine in the final installment of the New York Times bestselling trilogy The Mortal Instruments.

My Thoughts...

Another Awesome Book. I was not that hooked when I read the first one( Don't get me wrong I really liked it just was not in LOVE with it). But then when I read the 2nd one I totally was. I couldn't even get through another book until I read this one. I just had to find out what happened!!

And let me tell you, it was so AWESOME! I loved it. And I finally got what I wanted! I will not say what but I was so happy when it happened.

Clary is becoming pretty bad ass.. Jace is showing so much more of himself. Which I love. This is another book just filled with so much emotions from everyone and again non stop action. I was reading it last night and kept thinking okay this is my last chapter then I am going to bed but then at the end of the chapter something would happen that I would have to keep going.

I can not wait to read CoFA!!!

What do you look for in a Review?

Wednesday, January 26, 2011

What do you look for in a review?

Do you look to see the summary of the book?

A person's thoughts on what made it good or what did not?

A few spoilers?

Someone comparing it their favorite books?

These are just a few ideas, I thought of. But you can add anything you want..

What I look for..

I do not like reading over views of the book. Like I do not want to see what the back of the book said just repeated differently. That can drive me crazy when reading it. I already know pretty much about the story from the book itself. So I like to see why a person liked it. Was it a good romance, action, mystery. And then I would see how they rate it and maybe compare their other ratings to some of my own to see if we have the same taste. I want to know what made them like the book or characters and what did not.

City of Ashes Review

City of Ashes (Mortal Instruments)
City of Ashes (The Mortal Instruments #2)
by Cassandra Clare

Hardcover, 453 pages
Published March 25th 2008 by Margaret K. McElderry (first published January 1st 2008)

Review by Amber I

FROM GOODREADS
As readers of series starter City of Bones already know, teenager Clary Fray is a Shadowhunter, a demon slayer who has the gift of spotting Downworlder werewolves, vampires, and faeries. She is also an adolescent in an abnormally dysfunctional family: Her mom is in a magically induced coma and her father is probably insane and undoubtedly evil. All of which places Clary in situations that would challenge even the most talented average American girl.

My thoughts

Wow, I loved this book. I could not put it down. It was nonstop the whole book. I never wanted to stop reading it because I had to find out what was going to happen next.

Its hard to review this or give any of the story plot without giving too much away. So you will just have to read it.lol.

Trust me if you liked the first one then this is one for you..

Clary is going through so much. Her mom is still in a coma there is still tension with her and Jace. And now things with Simon are picking up but its not that simple. On top of that they all have to fight off her evil father and try to stop hundreds of demons from destroying everything. Clary also is learning new talents that her and Jace both have.

And Jace is facing even more. He may be out of the Clave and stripped of being a shadowhunter all because The Clave is thinking he is a spy. The other person he wants to turn too, is too scared because of her feelings for him. I felt really bad for him. He gave off so many emotions in this book.

5 out of 5 stars!!
